Pre & Postnatal Care + Pelvic Floor Strengthening
Pregnancy and postpartum recovery are some of the most physically demanding transitions the body experiences. At New Stride Physical Therapy, we provide movement-based rehabilitation and strength training to support women through this stage with a focus on stability, alignment, and pain relief.
What We Help With
- Pregnancy-related discomfort: Relief for the low back, hip, and pelvis.
- Postpartum core weakness: Rebuilding stability and resolving core weakness.
- Postural changes: Addressing structural shifts during and after pregnancy.
- Functional movement: Improving coordination, balance, and full-body strength.
Our Approach
Our comprehensive program combines proven physical therapy principles with Classical Pilates to safely restore strength, control, and confidence in your movement.
We focus deeply on:
- Pelvic floor strengthening and coordination (Movement-Based)
- Core stabilization (The lumbopelvic system)
- Postural alignment and movement retraining
- Pilates-based rehabilitation using specialized equipment (Mat, Reformer, and Cadillac)
The Classical Pilates Difference
True to the original teachings of Joseph Pilates, our purposeful mind-body-spirit approach utilizes non-impact, custom exercises tailored to your body's unique intricacies. The Reformer and Cadillac apparatus assist and challenge you to gain strength, flexibility, and precision. These benefits transfer directly into your daily life, resulting in a more upright, relaxed posture and greater ease of movement while caring for your baby.
How Movement Targets Your Pain
- Restores Postural Alignment: Throughout pregnancy, your posture alters and muscles become imbalanced, putting mechanical stress on your low back, pelvis, hips, and feet. Pilates targets and corrects these imbalances.
- Stabilizes the Lumbopelvic Region: As your baby grows, your center of gravity shifts, affecting coordination and balance. Pilates exercises enhance these skills safely without compromising your recovery.
- Strengthens the Shoulder Girdle: The physical demands of constantly lifting, carrying, and nursing a newborn require targeted upper-body strength and stability.
Strict Safety Modifications for Your Journey
Your safety is our absolute priority. Our expert team modifies every movement to accommodate your changing body using strict clinical guidelines:
- Diastasis Recti Screenings: We periodically check for abdominal separation to ensure your core exercises are safe and effective.
- Ergonomic Transitions: We teach you the proper, strain-free way to get up from the floor, often utilizing a raised mat or a Reformer converter to eliminate pelvic stress.
- Cardiovascular & Joint Protection: Every session includes structured warm-ups and cool-downs true to Joseph Pilates' original protocols.
- Controlled Ranges of Motion: We support your positions using small pillows, spine supporters, or small barrels, ensuring gentle, sub-maximal contraction (25%) of the pelvic floor and transversus muscles.
- Adjusting for Joint Laxity: Pregnancy hormones loosen ligaments, making you more vulnerable to sprains. We avoid long-lever movements and refrain from keeping you in the same position for too long, especially while standing.
